FeelHarmonic is a non-profit organization bringing a new kind of sound experience to the deaf community. By incorporating hands-on events at schools, educational institutions and communal centers, FeelHarmonic is allowing a new experience to a community unable to experience this previously.
Founder Brendan Angelides — who also goes by Eskmo — shared the following statement about FeelHarmonic:
\”After being inspired by various projects I was working on with my music and touring, I set out to develop a project to bring to deaf schools and hopefully help the kids there experience something new. The idea was to combine sound, animation and a physical sensation all into one experience.\”
Angelides used only a SubPac to create his music. A SubPac is a small vibrating unit that you place over the back of your chair or wear like a backpack. This invention is what eventually would allow the hearing impaired to feel music.
Angelides said the inspiration for his song came from an idea of colorful tiny shapes \”talking\” to one another, laughing, and then playing music.
\”The goal of the piece was to not just convey the experience of music, but even more importantly the feeling of communication.\”
FeelHarmonic is breaking ground with the SubPac technology. Angelides is allowing the deaf community the opportunity to not only experience music, but interact with it in a fun and exciting new way.
