It\’s not easy to make a name for yourself in a genre that is already saturated with tons of extremely talented artists. Young Niagara Falls native Isabelle Rezazadeh, also known as REZZ, has fought the odds stacked against her and is quickly making her way to the top.

REZZ specializes in dark and edgy, psychedelic techno. She started her career by teaching herself music software and promoting her music on various channels. She has not only dropped tracks with labels like mau5trap and OWSLA but has also been booked for huge festivals like TomorrowWorld and HARD Day of the Dead.

We were lucky to get a hold of REZZ and have her answer some questions for us. Check out the interview below.

I’ve read you came from a small town where EDM was not a popular genre of music. What DJs did you first hear that got you into it?

The very first producers I heard in dance music are pretty opposite of what I create. To list a couple, Tiësto & Afrojack. It wasn’t long until I heard of deadmau5 and Skrillex though & then just dove super deep and found tons of less popular names.

What music were you into before you discovered EDM?

I liked a bunch of bands like My Chemical Romance, Bring Me The Horizon, Metric…I loved it but not the way I love dance music.

What sparked your desire to make music?

Mainly after seeing deadmau5 perform a few times. The fact he plays basically all his own music and its all super cohesive…that\’s one of the main reasons I started producing. I also felt confident in the ideas in my head.

Getting into the music industry isn’t easy. What were some of the first steps you took to get discovered when you realized that making music was what you wanted to do? What song do you give credit to?

First way I began to get exposure was through blogs like \”EDM.com\”. I\’d email my stuff to them, get denied at times & approved at others. It was awesome for exposure amongst daily listeners. My first song to get a feature was \”YIN\”. After that, more and more songs would get featured and then I starting knowing more people, etc. Posting my music even in Facebook forums is what helped get recognition, you never know who\’s watching.

What would you say your style of music is?

Couldn’t even name it. Some sort of weird industrial bassy slow paced & super rhythm based music.

You have had a pretty big year and a big next couple of months coming up on tour with artists at React’s NYE in Chicago and Holy Ship! How does it feel?

It’s surreal. Speaking of it gives me chills. I\’m just so excited…I\’ve prepared a lot for this and I (think) I\’m ready to take it all on.

I’m sure being on stage is pretty nerve-racking. How do you cope?

I just get SUPER nervous prior to going on…for multiple reasons. Firstly, because I\’m worried something may go wrong technically and secondly of course is because of everybody watching your every move. Once I begin I\’m not nervous anymore.

What are some of the festivals or venues you want to play at?

Red Rocks, Coachella, EDC Vegas, Shambala to name a few.

A lot of DJs and producers see EDM changing, do you feel the same way and if so, where do you see it going?

I hardly notice it because at this moment. I\’m just so focused on myself and my music & touring that I hardly analyze the big picture.

Is there a message you want to send across to fans with your music?

I just want them to listen to my music and zone out in a way that nothing else exists…hypnotized. They can imagine what they’d like with my music…I\’ll leave it to them to interpret whatever they feel with the sounds I create, but over all I just want them to think it\’s really cool/inspiring.

Other than a few shows in January and February, what other plans do you have in 2016?

Other than touring and playing awesome festivals, I want to create.

Be sure to catch REZZ at Chicago\’s ReactionNYE (tickets) and at TheMID (tickets) on January 16, 2016.
