As the Lollapalooza 2018 lineup announcement nears, rumors circulate
As festival season nears, lineup rumors run rampant as excitement for live music and warm weather grows. Now that a handful of festival lineups have dropped, speculation for Chicago’s own Lollapalooza can kick into high-gear. The festival returns to its home in Grant Park August 2-5, 2018.
After scouring handfuls of festival lineups and multiple tour announcements, alongside the help of Reddit (specifically user u/jesus4jews), we made some educated guesses about this year’s Lollapalooza lineup.
Some larger names that seem highly likely include Arctic Monkeys, Axwell /\ Ingrosso, Cardi B, Jack White, ODESZA, Post Malone, and The Weeknd. The Arctic Monkeys have a new album dropping this year, and are playing Firefly, a festival which commonly shares artists with Lollapalooza. Axwell of Axwell /\ Ingrosso responded to a tweet asking about a Chicago show saying “It’s happening.” ODESZA seems to be likely as they are playing Coachella, a festival just as large as Lollapalooza. This same reasoning doubles for Post Malone, who is playing Coachella and Governors Ball.
Cardi B‘s agent said “In the U.S., she will be embarking on her first small-room headliner tour in March to support the release of her album. In addition, she has already locked in several major festival plays such as Coachella and Lollapalooza.”
Jack White seems like a plausible headliner for 2018. White does not have a Chicago date on his tour. Additionally, his tour has openings during Lollapalooza. He is scheduled to play at Governors Ball, Boston Calling, and Shaky Knees as well.
Some additional likely names include Fleet Foxes, MGMT, and What So Not. Fleet Foxes does not have a Chicago stop on their upcoming tour for Crack-Up, their newest album. Their tour schedule is open during Lolla, but also open during Pitchfork.
MGMT does in fact play in Chicago on March 3, but given Lollapalooza’s radius clause, their March stop does not rule them out from playing the August fest. What So Not does not have a Chicago date as well, and last played Lolla in 2015.
And of course, there is always Daft Punk. We’re going to go out on a limb and say the robots won’t be showing up in Grant Park this summer, but what is the fun of Lollapalooza lineup predictions without throwing the robots in there?
