If you\’re involved in the bass music scene in any way, the name EPROM should definitely sound familiar. Finding himself on stages in front of 15 people or stages in front of thousands, EPROM always drops the low frequencies in a way that gets the crowd going.
But who is Barclay Crenshaw?
Again, if you\’re involved in the electronic music scene, I can guarantee you\’ve heard of him before, but it\’s very likely you\’re more familiar with the moniker under which he makes house music: Claude VonStroke.
That\’s right, for his latest release, the Dirtybird Captain has done a complete 180; leaving his stage name at the door and producing two exquisite tracks that are described on his Soundcloud as \”metaphysical slow jams\”.
Many diehard Dirtybird Players were aware who Barclay Crenshaw was prior to this conjoined effort with EPROM, but as a producer, Barclay has only really represented his inclination towards bass music during his set at the Dirtybird Campout.
That Saturday night, Claude VonStroke performed from 11:30PM to 2AM, closing out the main stage. However, Barclay Crenshaw performed from 5AM-6AM at the after-hours stage, during which he did not play one house track. What he did play was old school rap like E40 and A Tribe Called Quest, newer hip hop like Future, and all manners of bass music including both of the tracks on his EP with EPROM; \’Crawled Eagle\’.
In an interview prior to the Campout, Barclay cited EPROM (who also performed at the after-hours stage on Saturday) as one of the artists he was most excited to see, which already indicates a certain level of respect. Here\’s what Barclay had to say about working with EPROM.
\”When i first heard about Eprom from Gaslamp Killer I totally freaked out, but when I heard his album Halflife I knew I had to work with him somehow. So I called him up and invited him down to LA. This was a really natural collaboration. He came down to Venice and we sat in the studio for 3 days working on these tunes. I don’t fan boy about very many producers but Eprom is one of the greatest in my humble opinion and he didn’t disappoint. We had all the analog stuff routing back and forth, then sampling it, resampling it, reworking it — the super cool mind of a maniac up in here.
Moon Juice was made strictly with 808 sounds, even the angelic arp style pads are made from modified 808 kick drums. Crawled Eagle is that more nasty Eprom vibe reminiscent of Center of the Sun from Halflife. I added all my bits throughout as well. Listeners beware this ain’t house music if that’s what you are expecting!\”
