Every week, Billboard releases its \”Social 50\” list which ranks the top 50 most \”social\” artists in entertainment. This ranking is based on the artist\’s popularity with new fans and followers on their social media outlets such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, SoundCloud, and YouTube. The list normally contains the very familiar and expected artists such as Katy Perry, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Justin Bieber. This week however, the Social 50 welcomed a newcomer – EDM artist Zedd.
Zedd is no stranger to the EDM community with his many collaborations and hit songs such as \”Clarity\” and \”Stay the Night,\” however others who are unfamiliar with the genre may be asking themselves, \”What\’s a Zedd?\” It seems as if that the DJ\’s popularity has skyrocketed outside of the EDM community after speculation of a rumored relationship with actress and singer Selena Gomez. The two have been collaborating on new music together, but some started to question their relationship going beyond a professional one after the two shared personal photos of each other on their Instagram accounts.

After these events, Zedd appeared for the first time ever on the Social 50 list this week at number 40 after gaining over 81,000 new followers on his Instagram account alone. He also showed a 288 percent increase in searches for his name on the well-known site, Wikipedia. Selena herself shows a stronger social presence coming in at number 2 on the list this week after being number 4 just last week. As a result, it\’s fair to say that the ongoing speculation could prove to be a strong marketing tool for them both.
