We have Diplo on one hand banning kandi from his Mad Decent Block Parties, and on the other, we have venues that are banning dance music altogether.
Our very own Chicago has reached an agreement with The Congress Theater\’s owner to rid the place of \”music created by a DJ or multiple DJs primarily using specialized equipment and software instead of traditional instruments\” from all future events. An official document outlines that the terms would still need to be enforced under a different operator in the future, and that if there is going to be any such music allowed in the place, it would need to be performed by real instruments and (or) accompanied by the vocalists that are featured in their production.
In other words, no Tiesto, Zedd, or Hardwell without Matthew Koma.
According to DNA Info\’s article published yesterday, there is legitimate concern on the city\’s part about noise, of course, but also the safety, or lack thereof, that the dance music scene allegedly creates.
Whether you think it\’s an insult to dance music or not, hostile intentions against our community are not what are at play here. Because of residential complaints, it seems that the Congress will not compromise a renewed liquor license, which they lost last year, for the sake of another Major Lazer show.
It\’s all business and management. That\’s the bottom line.
